My latest listings: Handmade Silver Necklaces

I spent a lovely morning yesterday making these two little owl necklace. I used precious metal clay to make the discs and then hand-stamped the design. You can find the little owl at Folksy and the large owl at Etsy.
Last week I made this snowflake necklace from precious metal clay with a snowflake white imprint and Let it Snow stamped on the reverse. You can find it in my Etsy and Folksy shops.

Customise Options: The snowflake can also be made to order with different wording on the reverse. I can also make a similar necklace with Let it Snow on the front and your own words on the reverse minus the snowflake. The Owl necklaces can also be personalised with your own words or a special date on the reverse. Let your imagination run wild! My featured Folksy seller this month is Martina of Personalised Treasures. My favourite items in her shop are the personalised sterling silver name necklaces and name bracelets hand stamped with names, date, initials or personal messages. Elegant and personal at the same time!

I will let the lovely Martina tell you more about herself and her work:

1.Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Martina and I love making things! I have had a go at all sort of crafts but I think jewellery making is my favourite. I'm a full time mum to a 2 year old little girl so my creative time is limited at the moment.

2.What do you reach for first thing in the morning?

Most mornings it is my laptop! I try to at least check my emails before my daughter wakes up at around 8am.

3.What’s better plain or milk chocolate?

I prefer milk chocolate but I'm more of a biscuit/ cake girl!

4.How did you discover that you have creative tendencies?

I think it was thanks to my mum, who is also quite creative (not so much now) but she taught me all the basic crafts when I was a little girl. Also seeing her making things made me want to do it too.

5.Where do you find your inspiration?

I was inspired by my new baby girl (congratulations!) when I created personalised jewellery as I wanted to wear something personalised with her name on. So I think she is the biggest inspiration. I also love showing her what I made, although she usually just ignores me...

6.Do you have any role models/inspirations in the area of Design? If so, who and why?

I find my fellow Folksy makers a real inspiration. Most of them are just ordinary, creative people, quite often self-taught who are very talented and make gorgeous things in order to make some extra pennies doing what makes them happy. That's my goal too... I love looking at their work!

7.How did you come up with the ideas for the products in your Folksy shop?

As I mentioned above it was when I had my little daughter, I started to make jewellery with her photos on and her name engraved. I then made some for my family and friends and it went from there...

8.What are your future plans for your work?

I would like to grow bigger and make more personalised jewellery but I can't until next year when my daughter goes to the nursery. In the meantime, I'm slowly adding new and original products, personalised copper guitar picks at the moments.

9.What’s your favourite thing in the world and why?

Apart from my family (of course!) I think it is Dogs! I love them and I think they make a real difference to your quality of life. Unfortunately, I don't have one at the moment.

10.Can you share some of your favourite Folksy shops with us?

I love The Cotton Potter - very simple but original and beautiful fabric flower wraps. Also Storeyshop- beautiful hand cut greeting cards. Last but not least Sarah Norwood animal theme handmade gifts. (Good choices - check you their shops!)

Handmade Crafts Giveaway!!!

Personalise it!

I have donated an Antique Script Silver Dog Tag Necklace to Handmade Crafts giveaway this month. The closing date is the 27th July 2011. To enter go to Handmade Crafts !

This pendant can be customised with a personalised engraving on the reverse, for example a significant phrase, name or date. It's made from precious metal clay which is 99% fine silver and fired in my kiln making it really strong. I add a patina to the silver to enhance the script and give it that vintage quality.

Update: A lovely lady called Lisa won the pendant! The giveaway was so popular (over one hundred entrants!) that I will be doing regular giveaways from my blog.

My phone, to turn the alarm onto snooze!

4.How did you discover that you have creative tendencies?

My Mum was always doing cross stitch when I was younger, and she encouraged me to do the same. I think it just evolved from there!

5.Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere! I couldn't say one main thing, but I guess I take a lot of inspiration from nature. I also love gathering all my supplies together infront of me, if I'm feeling a bity stuck for ideas. I find it really helps.

7.How did you come up with the ideas for the products in your Folksy shop?

Well, I'm quite a girlie girl, and I think my items show that! I love florals and I love lace..I use both of these a lot in my work. I guess I just make what I like! Hopefully others like it too!

8.What are you future plans for your work?

No immediate future plans really. I may start doing fingerprint jewellery soon, as I recently took a class in it.

9.What’s your favourite thing in the world and why?

I couldn't pick just one thing, honestly :) I think my current favourite thing is my diana mini. Pretty much in love with it!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself:
I live with my husband Steve, grown up daughter and 3 rescue dogs. I help run Woof Beginnings an organisation to help raise funds for rescue dogs. Work full time with Bags of Swank by SimJaTa, coming up with new idea's to tempt you with. If I am not crafting (or dog walking) I will be found on Folksy, or searching around the internet for new and exciting fabrics. I also look after my parents, and try to find spare time for photographing wildlife, always good to get out from time to time.

2. What do you reach for first thing in the morning?

That’s easy, has to be a cup of tea before the day begins.

3. What’s better plain or milk chocolate?

Any chocolate, but has to be flavored in some way, like mint or with nuts, yum.

4. How did you discover that you have creative tendencies?
I have always 'tinkered' with one thing and another, not a person who can easily sit idle. Sewing was something I did for fun, did a spell at jewellery making, card making, photography, before making up my first bag as a gift, redundancy forced me into starting up my business, which turned out to be far more fun than an office desk and accounts.

5. Where do you find your inspiration?

Inspiration is all around, as an animal lover a lot of my themes are animal related from pets to wildlife and even in the sea. My head is always brimming with idea's faster than my hands can keep up.

6. Do you have any role models/inspirations in the area of Design? If so, who and why?
Very boring, I'm afraid I don’t. Very much my own person with my own ideas.

7. How did you come up with the ideas for the products in your Folksy shop?
I started with the idea of upcycling, I still dabble with that from time to time, but did not catch on how I had hoped. So progressed to new fabrics and themes, I try to find as many as I can to appeal to all tastes. Never being a person to conform I try to concentrate on limited ideas some of the bags might be 'one off' designs, never more than four with similar styles, and nothing is ever identical. So much gloom and doom around these days I enjoy working with and producing bright and cheerful themes to try spread some of that brightness around.

8. What are you future plans for your work?
To create more popular designs, and in the immediate future hoping to corner another real shop, its a cafe and gift shop that I am hoping to get my bags into and looking good so far, sample just done and if she likes it - I should be there. That will be my 5th shop and I think enough to handle for one person with Folksy too.

9. What’s your favourite thing in the world and why?

I discovered recently it’s my shower. I just adore having my nice hot shower twice a day - not really a luxury until you loose your heating and hot water, realised I really cannot live without it, two trips to Mums a day was not very convenient. Now I have it back and tell my shower just how much I love her each day.

10. Can you share some of your favourite Folksy shops with us?

Shops I like. This is a really tough choice as there are so many, I hate only choosing a small number, the list I have is more like 20.

My first is Nithria Cards; Wenona was one of my first customers and a great support to me. But not only that, she has fabulous jewellery of which I have some fantastic earrings she made, and I buy all my special cards from her as she always tunes in with what I need and comes up with not only the right card but also a fabulous verse that is just right to go inside.

Next is Aileen Clarke Crafts, how stunning is this ladies work? One of my friends keeps sheep, and another has just taken a job tending sheep for Lancashire Wildlife Trust, so I have an interest in sheep and landscape - her jewellery is just amazing and she also does bookmarks and cards, I have just bought one and it is more stunning than the pictures. A superb talent, and also a personal touch when she sends out her crafts.

Finally, its Artisan Silver - yes I know it’s her blog, and no I am NOT groveling. I just adore this jewellery and there is more on my favourites list than anything else. My Mum loves Owls so I love all of those, and Doves have a very special place with me and some of my family. The jewellery has such a different style than you would see anywhere else, individual and stunning.

11. When last made you laugh out loud?

This morning, I walk a golden retriever called Bailey. Just discovered he has had an under active thyroid he has been having treatment for, he is 5 years old and for the last 12 months been like an old dog. Today we took him with our dogs to the beach, he splashed and ran around with our dogs like a new puppy, the best sight ever to see this dog having the fun he should, rolling around in the muck and having a whale of a time, his antics had me doubled up with laughter this morning.

12. What's great about Folksy?

Folksy is fab, a super friendly forum with the best handmade talent you can find in one place, you need not leave your seat to find the best gifts alongside practical items to choose from. Friendly, efficient sellers who take so much time and care with their crafts and their packaging and after care.

4. How did you discover that you have creative tendencies? When I made a Father Christmas out of a loo roll at the age of five! And I still have it!!

5. Where do you find your inspiration? In my head mainly! If I see something that is wacky, off the wall, weird or unusual I will probably like it and get inspired by it.

6. Do you have any role models/inspirations in the area of Design? If so, who and why? I love shabby inspired design. I especially that look in homes. Show homes make me cringe! Also I love a digital artist by the name of Itkupilli – weird and wonderful.

7. How did you come up with the ideas for the products in your Folksy shop? I have had three previous shops all with a mixture of items, anything from cards to art to egg cosies! I have worked with paper, felt, canvas, ceramic…the list goes on. I would get bored if I had one main “line.” I just cannot help trying anything and everything!!

8. What are you future plans for your work? To expand my product range – a bit of everything all with an edge. Also to concentrate on my website more. I am moving this year so hopefully I will have more money to fill it up and advertise it properly!

9. What’s your favourite thing in the world and why? If it’s a “thing” – then a cats purr or a birdsong. They both make me smile.

1.Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Hannah. I’m 25 and from Cornwall. I work in Payroll and Pensions at a local College and I’m also doing a foundation degree part time in Wildlife Education and Media. If you met me either at home or work you can tell one of my passions is seals! The other is cats and wolves.

2.What do you reach for first thing in the morning?

My phone! Sad but true. It doubles up as an alarm and is handy to see whether I had any interesting emails through the night. More often than not no! Then I usually go down to check on the cats.

3.What’s better plain or milk chocolate?

Milk chocolate definitely especially Galaxy mmmm!

4.How did you discover that you have creative tendencies?

It tends to flare up now and again. For me since I’m very much a numbers freak it does tend to repress my creativity at times but I’ve never considered myself visually creative unless you count the endless hours in primary school designing clothes! I’m more creative with words and it has only been since April this year I’ve started expressing myself with beads and gems.

5.Where do you find your inspiration?.

From things I watch or read to even nature itself. I try and produce something slightly different and that reflects myself.

6.Do you have any role models/inspirations in the area of Design? If so, who and why?

7.How did you come up with the ideas for the products in your Folksy shop?

My sister turned 21 this year and I wanted to do something a bit different as a gift, something she could keep. So I bought a magazine got inspired by something in there and went on to produce a gorgeous wire cage charm bracelet and earrings. It also coincided with a low point at work and helped to keep me sane so I got more supplies and couldn’t stop! I try to create something that slightly different but will cheer up at the same time.

8.What are you future plans for your work?

Keep crafting! Currently I tend to only use Folksy as a selling medium and would like to expand into other markets. I also want to play around with polymer clay- have had a small attempt at this so far and it looks promising!

9.What’s your favourite thing in the world and why?

Cake! There is nothing better than good cake- it makes your worries go away for a time. There’s this place near me- Trevaskis Farm that does amazing cakes portions are the size of small meals!

10.Can you share some of your favourite Folksy shops with us?

Welcome Putting on the Charms! Please tell us about yourself...

1. Tell us about yourself: My name is Marie, I am 46 years old and I live in Portsmouth, where I am a librarian (part-time) at the University. I am married to Jules and have one daughter, Holly, who is eleven, going on twenty-one. We also have a mad yellow labrador called Majic, three guinea pigs and a hamster...

2. What's the first thing you grab in the morning? The first thing I grab is my slippers. We have a very cold stone floor in the kitchen and I hate cold toes. The second (and equally important) thing that I grab is the kettle - I am a monster until I've got two cups of tea inside me.

3. What's better - Plain or milk chocolate? Milk chocolate - especially Flakes and Ripples - but ALL chocolate is good.

4. How did you discover you had artistic tendencies? I've always been vaguely "arty." My art teacher phoned my mum in tears when I decided not to go to art college. I didn't think I was good enough, but this was all years ago. I usually channel my creativity into writing - I have had several short stories published in Bella, and have been working on a novel for longer that I care to remember... It was when I became disillusioned with the novel that my husband bought me a jewellery making kit for my birthday, and pretty soon I was hooked.

5. Where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration in everything, really - but I guess nature is a predominant theme, especially in my charm bracelets.

6. Do you have any role models/inspiration in the area of design? If so, who and why? I don't have any role models as such - I've got eclectic tastes and like what I like.

7. How did you come up with the ideas for your lovely Folksy shop? The charm bracelets started it all, and they began as a simple (experimental) bracelet that I made for myself. Soon my family and friends were asking for bracelets, and then friends of friends. I think that this is what gave me the confidence to open my shop in Oct this year, and I have already sold seven charm bracelets on Folksy, so I guess someone likes them!!

8. What are your future plans for your work? My very immediate work plans are the Victorian Festival of Christmas - a big three day event in Portsmouth, next weekend!! I have to dress up as a Victorian and look like Mrs Tiggiwinkle - but I'm hoping that I won't scare off potential customers... After the Festival I will be fulfilling Christmas orders for charm bracelets and then in the New Year I shall start to think about what to do next. I like polymer clay and steampunk and these are elements that may (or may not, if it all goes horribly wrong) feature in my work.

9. What's your favourite thing to do in the whole world and why? Favourite time is "Pyjamas and Slippers" I started this tradition with my daughter Holly when Jules used to be in a band and was out gigging most weekends. On a Saturday we'd snuggle down in our pyjamas and slippers, get a big bar of chocolate and watch a film.

10. Can you share some of your favourite Folksy shop with us? There are lots of fantastic shops of Folksy - I've got pages of favourites. I particularly like Rags to Roses. Katy makes beautiful flower corsages, Dab and a Dash has some lovely notebooks, NOfkants Curios is a lovely shop - she had some great knitted bags, Lou Lou's Luxuries has some beautiful jewellery, as does JAusten Jewellery - I've bought Christmas presents from both of these, MaxineVeronica Jewellery is beautiful ( fantastic colours) Diddy Bears are so cute, and I will be getting one for Holly, Elibee Gifts has some great clocks and Ali Bali makes the kind of jewellery I would like to make - if I were brave enough to try precious metal clay....

This morning the autumn sun was gorgeous and strong with the last rays of a late summer sun. Lee and I went for a walk along the beach scouring the sands for sea tumbled gems. He made the greatest find with a piece of ceramics, but typically he was most proud of a barnacled shell!
